Irina Okula is a potter from Ipswich, MA who specializes in saggar firing. For over forty years Irina has travelled the world in pursuit of the art of ceramics. From Japanese teapots to Mayan ruins, from Chinese workshops to Native American wood firings, Irina has dedicated her life to learning about pottery, and teaching it to others.

Currently she is mastering the technique of saggar firing. By firing pots in a clay container, a "saggar" that has been filled with natural combustibles such as hay, sawdust and seaweed and wrapped with copper wire, string and tape, magical patterns appear on the pots, such as the one on the right. Of course it is not as simple as it sounds ...

The CraftBoston 2004 turned out to be quite the success. Irina mingled with the country's top craft artist, met some very interested and interesting clients, and had a really good time.

Irina is planning a trip to Haystack Mountain School of Crafts for their first summer session June 6th until June 18th. She will be studying with Tony Marsh, the Program Chair of the Ceramics Art Program at the University of California Long Beach. During the session, the students will be exploring the handbuilt vessel and its role in ritual, utility, sculptural entities, decoration and metaphor.


Irina Okula has been recognized by the Ipswich Chronicle. as a local artist who's art is a "...beautiful melding of patterns, designs, textures and colors."


Irina Okula has been accepted to participate in the third annual CraftsBoston Project. Over 175 local and international artists will participate in the showcase of contemporary arts and crafts including baskets, ceramics, decorative fiber, wearables, furniture, glass, jewelry, leather, metal, mixed media, paper and wood.
